	Lupine in review, fibers of the future&#38;nbsp;
A research and developmental project, executed in the years of 2020-2022. The purpose of this project is to investigate the potential use of fibous material, processed from the Alaska lupine (Lupinus nootkatensis). A central issue for further product development of the fibous material was to determine its chemical contents as well as its characteristics. The project´s innovation is the utilization of local plant biomass. On one hand as a building material and on the other hand as a raw material for food packaging. A sustainable source for an eco-friendly product.
The main partners of the project were Matis and the IceTec. The project was funded by the&#38;nbsp;Technology Development Fund.

In the middle of the last century, seeds and roots of the Lupinus nootkatensis were brought to Iceland to be used in land reclamation. For a long time, the specie’s distribution was limited, but in the 90’s the species started to spread out and is now widespread throughout the country. The current yield in the south of Iceland alone amounts to 7-8 tons of lupine per hectare a year. The fiber of the lupine plant is a type of non-wood fiber.

&#60;img width="3000" height="2500" width_o="3000" height_o="2500" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/8ffff2c654f111331c06dd557eb1f858b22f7e09eeebf6aea5a293fefc4b14b2/mynd-2_klippt.jpg" data-mid="1283786" border="0" /&#62;Part of the project was to figure out how we could collect a considerable amount of raw material from the lupine plant, using equipment that could be obtained without much cost. We tried various tools and devices. The picture on the left shows a tractor connected to a device we used to shred and collect the raw material. This device proved useful for gathering the lupine aerial parts.

The next step was to figure out how we could dry the raw material in significant quantities. At the farm Þorvaldseyri, we had the opportunity to experiment with drying the lupine’s raw material in the barn air dryer. It worked well and we had enough supplies of lupine fiber material to experiment with for the next year.

&#60;img width="3000" height="2500" width_o="3000" height_o="2500" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/e82714b99fe1138543bb33db03eda0c9b4661e696c08df78da00a4cacb38f3ea/suda.jpg" data-mid="1283844" border="0" /&#62;Non-wood fibers possess a rich variety of excellent properties in physical and optical aspects, which could be used in the field of pulp and papermaking. Pulp making refers to the use of a chemical method, mechanical method, or a combination of these two methods. As raw materials, plant fibers are made into bleached or unbleached pulp by the dissociation production process.Matis was in charge of chemically controlled degradation experiments such as with acid, base and enzymes. Matis also took care of various types of measurements such as textural, chemical, quinolizidine and microbial analysis. In collaboration with Matis, we were able to develop a method to produce a fibrous material that is safe in contact with food.

&#60;img width="575" height="430" width_o="575" height_o="430" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/90aec3e987fdfcceb5acb4d26f0c7b6c4c6f88b5d2a88740fd5db5eb87446e89/matis.jpg" data-mid="1283841" border="0" /&#62;&#60;img width="436" height="330" width_o="436" height_o="330" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/2fb147ba599dbd07642c59cd8616ca0d104258dea5309c3060a5163929b1a3f6/genfr.jpg" data-mid="1283877" border="0" /&#62;In collaboration with Matis, a reproducible up-scaled method was developed and provided a safe material that can be utilized to produce durable, safe, food packaging.

The processing method chosen for scale-up trial was based on the results obtained from the different measurements performed on the different materials. For sustainability reasons the aerial parts after seeding were chosen.

The purpose of this part of the project was to test lupine fiber material in the field of building materials. Environmentally friendly fiber-boards were made without any additives. IceTec was brought in to carry out measurements and tests on the fiber-boards. The tests were; tensile strength, elastic constant, moisture absorption, moisture expansion, water absorption, sound absorption, mold sensitivity and retention. In general, various aspects of the production of the fiber material would need to be improved, in particular the uniformity of production. It would then be necessary to develop an environmentally friendly moisture barrier for the fiber material to improve its resistance to moisture and mold.&#60;img width="3000" height="2500" width_o="3000" height_o="2500" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/cc3d57745534e8924da1a75fa6924ec74dc1b994199a875e6f188420938f9bd7/bur.jpg" data-mid="1283863" border="0" /&#62;
&#60;img width="2918" height="2500" width_o="2918" height_o="2500" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/d7ce34f3b532f97c75baeef9c4cc73cb9e483d809ef531a40cbedaebd70a2275/fraesa_logo.jpg" data-mid="1283846" border="0" /&#62;We believe that there are many possible uses for fiber material made from Alaska lupine because the material is able to be formed into many shapes and molds and can be cut with various tools. The main challenge is to be able to protect the material from moisture so that it can be used in the most diverse ways.

Our ideal and the project’s main goal has always been that the fiber material should be environmentally friendly and can fall into the cycle of nature after its purpose and use. We also believe it is extremely important that the resource is used in a sustainable manner. Lupine in review, fibers of the future.

	We have been focusing on the lupine plant as a raw material for a while, but the lupine is also interesting in a societal perspective. It is an endless source of lively conversations, most people seem to&#38;nbsp;have&#38;nbsp;a&#38;nbsp;love or&#38;nbsp;hate&#38;nbsp;relationship with it.&#38;nbsp;The Icelandic sheep has also recently become controversial. It has been farmed here for ages for woollens and subsistence, but recently a group of people consider it to be a cause of soil erosion in Iceland. We find it interesting to look at those two species in Icelandic landscape and combine them in a work of fine art.

	Collaboration

	Lupend

Seetal Solanki the writer of the book, „Why Materials Matter.“ invited the Lupine project to publish the project in her book. When launching&#38;nbsp;the book during London Design Festival in november 2018, she invited the project to be&#38;nbsp;involved within an&#38;nbsp;exhibition&#38;nbsp;during the week. The task was „to create a bookend, which will support the book and the book supports the material as well as the person who's made it; a nice little circular conversation whereby one could not exist without the other.“&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

&#60;img width="1200" height="843" width_o="1200" height_o="843" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/ae75c0725bf6138708b5d2dd47ca175fae199f880ab86241d7abfec824d785d4/Ma-tt-er_Why-Materials-Matter-Bookends_Lupine-Project_Photography-credits-Dilesh-Solanki-001.gif" data-mid="765193" border="0" /&#62;

	About the book

What does it mean to live in a material world? This book tackles these questions by focusing on various issues that human beings face and by discussing potential materials-related solutions.
	About the bookend

The bookend „Lupend“ is made out of a light material, purely from roots of the lupine plant, it is designed for a specific book. The bookend wraps its arms around the book and gives it back the support it gives the material by publicizing it.

	The project „Lupine in review - fibers of the future“

which was funded by Technology Development Fund of Iceland, is now finished and has been achieved. The goal of the project was to study and develop fiber materials derived from the alaskalupine, to produce an environmentally sustainable and food safe packaging. Tests were also carried out on fiberboards made of lupine, in the field of building materials.

The results of the project show that it is possible to work e.g. food packaging or building materials from sustainable underutilized raw materials of alaskalupine. It is safe to say that the development of decomposition methods has been successful and chemical research has confirmed them.

The next steps are to continue developing the fiber material for food packaging and to test it for different types of food, e.g. vegetables.

		<description>Material potency

	The goal of this research was to find out, with simple experiments,&#38;nbsp;if production of biodegradable material from lupine without any additives was possible.
	&#60;img width="600" height="600" width_o="600" height_o="600" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/a5ae16fc667010622dce7b73731757f66866ac536ab6a3a13821fc358fd91870/IMG_2125.gif" data-mid="374647" border="0" /&#62;

	Research proceduresThe research implicated making fibreboards samples from raw material of lupine, comparing different harvesting season as well as different parts of the plant. Five samples were made of each portion to calculate means and standard error statistics.Sample A had the substance of plant roots, sample B was the root mixed with stems and sample C had substance of the stems.

	Testing material potency
After making material samples, standard procedure tests were made in Nysköpunarmiðstöð Íslands (Innovation Center Iceland). Testing the material to indicate it´s flexural strength.

Statistics of flexural strength tests

Compairing materials
Having made the standard tests it becomes possible to compare the material with other materials on market, biodegradable or not.ResultsResults of the standard flexural tests, compared to other tests show the lupine fibreboards to appear with low density fibreboard (insulation board) and/or medium density fibreboard (MDF).ConclusionThe results designate the lupine as a promising material for some kind of production.

	Lupine in review

	Lupinus Nootkatensis is a legume, it has been successful in reclamation of sterile soil in Iceland since 1945 when it was imported from Alaska. The lupine is invading perishable areas in Iceland. A number of people are trying to get rid of it because of this ability, only seeing its flaws. The lupine is an interesting plant for its&#38;nbsp;ability to produce nitrogen, it&#38;nbsp;provides&#38;nbsp;nutrition for&#38;nbsp;itself as&#38;nbsp;well as other plants and is sustainable. Its construction consists&#38;nbsp;of&#38;nbsp;protein, ash,&#38;nbsp;minerals,&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;cellulose,&#38;nbsp;with&#38;nbsp;lignin as the main cellulose. We found it interesting to investigate the lupine, to do a material research on its potentials for raw material. Try to produce a biodegradable product without any additives. Succeeding this task, could give the lupine a second opportunity on a new basis.
